According to the U.S. Wall Ball Association, beach-goers hitting a bald tennis ball up against wooden jetties inspired the New York Parks Department to build community handball courts in city parks back in the 1930’s. These days, the game is a professional sport known as Wall Ball, enjoyed at athletic centers across the country. Dmitry Druzhinsky, co-founder of MatchPoint NYC, a premier health and fitness center located in Brooklyn, was recently joined by area politicians for the Pro Wall Ball Tournament. This large annual competition – billed as the “Battle of the Boroughs,” serves to raise awareness of public health and youth empowerment. The winning team was awarded a trophy and bragging rights for the next year.
